It's a Great Day to Be Crocodiles in Kenya
My poem was published in the journal Rainy Weather Days--Volume 3. I wrote it to protest the brutal and deadly crackdown on peaceful tax protesters in Kenya in June 2024 and to be a voice for those for whom it is too dangerous to speak up.
It is a pattern poem in the stylized shape of a crocodile representing the many Kenyans, in particular those from Gen Z, who were abducted, tortured, and killed when President William Ruto raised taxes to pay down Kenya's staggering debts. Rather than address rampant government corruption, new taxes were imposed on essential goods largely on the backs of the poor. The mutilated bodies of those calling for reform were frequently found dumped in rivers and reservoirs where they were essentially crocodile food.
